ISLIP TOWN--Time is running out for residents with outstanding parking tickets to take advantage of the Town of Islip’s current parking ticket amnesty program. Until Thursday, Dec. 31, the town is allowing scofflaws to pay just 60 percent of their fines and penalties on unpaid parking tickets issued between Jan. 1, 2008 and Sept. 30, 2015.
This marks the town’s first parking ticket amnesty program in three years. It is being implemented by Hempstead-based FBS Inc., which is the town’s authorized collection service.
“This amnesty period is coming to a close, and we encourage residents to take advantage of this program before it’s too late,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “We felt that the holiday season would be a good time for people to cross it off their to-do lists and start the New Year fresh.”
The average fine from a parking ticket in Islip is $75. Unpaid tickets accrue over time and are assessed penalties between $170 and $310.
Carpenter noted that there are currently about 14,000 unpaid tickets in Islip and that the town is owed over $4 million.
“It’s a substantial amount of money, and we want to get it off the books,” said Carpenter. “This provides those with outstanding tickets the opportunity to settle them. It’s in everyone’s best interest.”
Town officials hoped to take in about $250,000 since the program began on Nov. 15. So far, Carpenter said they are close to reaching that goal, with $229,491 generated to date.
Carpenter said she does not anticipate an extension and that this would likely be the public’s last chance to receive a discount in the foreseeable future. She also stated that town authorities would pursue its money from violators more aggressively once the grace period ends.
“I don’t anticipate [reinstating the program] anytime soon, and we will step up our collection efforts for sure,” said Carpenter. “Then people wouldn’t worry about paying, and it wouldn’t be fair to the people who do pay their tickets on time.”
Those with tickets are encouraged to mail their payment to the Parking Violations Bureau, 28 Nassau Avenue, Islip, NY 11751. All payments must be postmarked before Dec. 31, 2015.
